Snow Removal

The Parkesburg Public Works Department is responsible for ensuring that Borough roadways are safe and accessible during the winter season.   Please drive with caution during the winter season and adjust your speed accordingly since hazardous conditions may exist due to snow, wind, and freezing temperatures.

Resident Responsibility: Snow and/or ice must be removed from all sidewalks abutting the property within a period of 36 hours after the snow and/or ice has stopped falling to a minimum width of 24″. Snow packed or frozen surfaces must be treated with salt, sand, aggregate or chemicals and must be kept clear of drifting, pushed or plowed snow. Any snow removed from properties should not be thrown into any street or alley – this would be a violation of the ordinance which carries a fine of up to $300. Snow Removal Ordinance (Ordinance #490)

Mail Boxes

At times, heavy slush discharged from a plow will knock down a mailbox. Most mailboxes, if properly placed and installed, will withstand heavy slush. The Borough will NOT be responsible for damage done to mailboxes knocked down by heavy snow or slush. Before winter, please make sure that your mailbox is properly fastened to the pole.  Your assistance is needed in removing the snow from in front of your mailbox. The extreme ice and snow packed around the mailbox prevents the plow truck from removing the snow without causing damage to the mailbox.

Clearing your driveway

Salting and plowing are difficult operations to perform.  Please keep in mind that it is almost impossible to keep snow from being deposited at your driveway during plowing, as the plow cannot be lifted or stopped at each driveway as it passes.

The Borough would like to remind all property owners that plowing of snow is an imperfect process and certain inconveniences are unavoidable. The two most common complaints received by the Borough are damage to mailboxes and the plowing has closed off previously cleared driveways. There are no remedies to these problems. The Borough plow must operate at a minimum rate of speed in order to create enough momentum to remove snow from the roads. We ask for your understanding and your acceptance of these realities and suggest that, if possible, you delay shoveling your driveway until after the Borough plow has completed snow removal. The Borough’s snow removal operator works long hours trying to do his best for the benefit of all.

Please, do not empty snow from your driveway into the roadway.  This slows the overall plowing operation and if snow that is placed in the street freezes, it can create a traffic hazard.
